Hey there! I'm Ian David Marsden, a cartoonist, illustrator, and hand-drawn video producer with 20+ years of experience. My work has been published in international magazines like The New Yorker and MAD Magazine, and I've also created content for children's TV, advertising, corporate clients, and more.
Did you know that I was the first Google Doodle artist from 1999 to 2000? My first graphic novel, an adaptation of Marvin Hamlisch's official biography, was released in February 2020 by Schiffer Publishing to critical acclaim.

🎅 Santa's Wine Fun! | 'Grinch' Song & Timelapse Cartoon 🍷
Watch as I, Ian David Marsden, a professional freelance illustrator and cartoonist, bring to life a whimsical Christmas scene in this timelapse illustration. You'll see Santa Claus in a playful cartoon, enjoying the nectar of the vine as a tribute to the beautiful Pic Saint-Loup region in Languedoc, while the mischievous Grinch indulges in a bottle himself.
And for a bit of unexpected holiday fun, you'll hear me singing 'You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch.' It might come as a surprise to many that I occasionally enjoy belting out a tune - though I assure you, my main passion remains in illustration! This singing is just me sharing a bit of light-hearted holiday cheer.

nice video wanna be friend?
Ink sketching is so cool
Uh-huh Cool~
was this done on computer or an ipad pro or some kind of drawing tablet
It was done on a Wacom Cintiq screen - I highly recommend them. 👍🏻
Ok now I'm shocked... This scetch shows how near the UFO Ive seen 10 years ago was to me. It was night too and I was by feet on a road like this. But we were two, me and my old best friend and it was directly above us. And it had a third light in the middle
Oh that's amazing! I am always intrigued by real encounters.
I feel like this is the closest to the one I might of seen
Happy Birthday!
Hi thank you for the tutorial, very informative I will definitely try manga studio, I have the Cintiq 27” QHD and I am working with photoshop cs6, they have a trial version on Monga Studio and is not expensive it’s only 168 pound which is 👍
Thank you. I think you will love it.
Thank you!!
Very glad you liked it.
Can I use the Wacom Tablet to work directly in Adobe Illustrator?
yes absolutely you have line dynamics and all kinds of cool features you wouldn't have otherwise.
ruclips.net/video/8hvxc59LxFI/видео.html
Why does my art work in photoshop using Cintiq 27QHD keep moving aroung while working even if I'm using the glove. I've been reduce to using a mouse to draw with.
It sounds like you have the TOUCH function activated. Just turn that off either by clicking on the icon at the top of the screen or in the Wacom Preferences Pane.
why is there aliens smoking joints? hahaha
Does the Wacom Cintiq work easily with a MAC?
Yes. Plug and play. You have to have the rights jacks though so check which model you have.
What do you choose Corel for over photoshop? I mainly use photoshop for texturing.
I used to work in Corel MANY years ago - now it's definitely always photoshop. I also work in Illustrator and other Adobe software and they are all compatible.
Hi Ian, I've literally just set up my Cintiq 27 QHD touch today. It's the first time I've purchased/used a tablet of any kind, so will be a steep learning curve I'm sure. I'm a professional vector illustrator (www.stuartholmes.com) so am fully adept working with Ai CC, but only with a mouse... up until now that is! I really appreciate you posting this video and I love your work, it's great to see the working in progress. It really helps me understand the capabilities of the free flowing nature of the Cintiq. My work is currently very geometric. I'd love to know what calligraphic brushes you would recommend, I know you mentioned www.kylebrush.com which I will check out. Is there any others? Or do you mostly create your own brushes? Do you have a tutorial on how to do this at all - any advice gratefully received. Thanks from Melbourne Australia!
Hi Stuart, great news that you are entering Cintiq waters. Yes I can highly recommend Kylebrushes for Photoshop. In Illustrator I read a few blog posts and tutorials on on the web how to modify my brushes and I just experimented until I had a set together that mimicked my responsive pen nibs and lines in other software. It's very easy you just need to play with the pressure and angle settings. Many good ones already come with the software. Have fun and I look forward to seeing your new work.
really awesome.. from now i am like to work on manga studio..
I'm glad you found a new drawing software based on this video :) Have fun!
Question!! Can you copy over a line art template so you can color and edit the lines and stuff on a wacom cintiq pro 13 Tablet..?
Hi, I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean. You can certainly scan in or load a template and then trace or copy over it and work with and manipulate the art in various applications on a Cintiq 13. Can you be a bit more specific of what you want to do?
Thanks!
I´m putting up a site and I need a couple of dozens of images (cartoons or clipart). I’d like to get in touch with someone who can help me design them. If you are interested you can contact me at my email: reodancer@gmail.com so I can explain you more in detail what I need. If you are good at drawing it’ll take you minutes to create each image. I could pay you with Paypal if you have an account with them. If not it is very easy to open one.
how did you set up your brushes (im new with a cintiq) seems like pathfinder works immediately (or is it just the video speed .?) if not how did you do that
Hi - good question. I have command+F assigned to Flatten/Exand and strokes that are not made with a brush, so a simple keyboard shortcut (you can set that up in your settings/preferenes) I also made an action which makes it a paint object then expands the paint object. So "Live Paint Make" and then followed by "Live Paint Expand" - save that as an action. It will do all the pathfinder operations and flattening for you. Hope this makes sense.
Hi Ian, I really enjoyed this video. I'm considering buying a Cintiq 27" Touch - I've heard the touch element isn't very responsive within Adobe illustrator - do you use a Cintiq touch? If so, how have you found it with Ai? Thanks.
Hi Stuart, thanks, I'm glad you liked the video. I have the Cintiq 27 QHD Touch and yes, you have a very good point, even though I am a huge fan of the device, sadly I have to confirm that the touch element is at best unreliable and quite frankly not worth the extra cost. I don't even activate it anymore. This is not only a problem in AI but in pretty much all applications I use, Adobe or not. However, I can strongly recommend the Express Key Remote.
Hi Ian, apologies for not getting back to you on this one, I've only just seen that you replied. I really need to set up comment reply notifications on you tube/google. Thanks for your answer. I did get the touch in the end in case drivers/software change and improve the touch aspect somehow
Inspiring stuff as usual Ian. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Ivan.
One mans 'basic' is another mans 'DAMN THAT'S AWESOME...i'm SO inspired'!
Hi James, very glad you enjoyed the video.
Isn't this the best cartoon ever? I like it so much. Such fun! ,✌⊂(✰‿✰)つ✌¸,
Thank you 😊
This is a very informative video! Thank you so much for posting this! 😄
You're welcome. I will be putting more videos up soon. Stay tuned! :)
Hah, it's a lil bit strange one
neice niece:)
your vids are nicey
+KidsPlanet Thank you very much :)
Insane vid~ 0_0
I'm having issues keeping my detailed lines when using the pen tool. I have a lot of zigzags and bumps in my rough draft, but it's being smoothed out in when using the pen tool. Can you help?
+Sara Gomez yes I think so. This is in your pen settings. When you double click the pen you will have options on how much accuracy and how much smoothing you want. Some people like a lot of auto correction but if you want every movement and wiggle of your pen and hand to translate to your line you should set it low or to zero. Let me know if this helped at all. All the best - Ian
I will fix them, and let you know. Thank you Ian! :)
ola lan eu já acompanho o seu canal á um bom tempo os videos são fodas eu tenho um canal de desenho vou esta deixando o link do canal e esse ruclips.net/channel/UCazrgtExe4enk1BF423WuYw

Hello, what brushes you use ??
+João Júnior I customized various brushes in Illustrator - mostly as a basis I used the calligraphic brushes.
Very good your work, you opened my mind!
+João Júnior Thank you very much
Nice toons man. I would like to know if one can draw on paper, scan the image import the file and animate the image that you've drawn on paper in the beginning with that software. thanks.
+Iam Nice you can import paper scans into flash and you can also import them into Adobe Illustrator and convert them to vector art and then import them to Flash. Yes you can also animate these but you would have to "cut" the drawings and make separate elements (arms, head, legs, objects etc) as symbols if you want them to move separately. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Great. Thanks man. Once again keep doing what you do best! Cheers!
As an animator have you had any experience with blender? If so can one create decent 2d cartoons with it. If you check for 2D animation blender youtube vids, you will see what I mean
Iam Nice Hi I am only vaguely familiar with blender, although I was trained on Maya and 3D Studio max and I know that most 2D animation is made in these kind of 3D programs - including South Park etc. So yes Blender can certainly create excellent 2D animation. You probably have to import everything as PNG sprites on transparency...
+Ian David Marsden thanks again. I think I'm gonna make you my goto guy for all things animation. Cheers!
Drawing with my 5 year old daughter Nina. :)
This is amazing, i really like your tutorial. But, can you make tutorial about what shortcut or what menu tool did you use on this video. Because i'm so lost ToT sorry i'm beginner
Hi Dona, thanks. I am glad you like my video. I will try and be more clear on menus, tools and shortcuts next time.
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH, I'm really happy that you also considered about us beginners \( `.∀´)/ thank you thank you...will be waiting for your next tutorial
really nice video dude
Thank you very much.
Happy New Year to all of you. :) Drawing Santa making a painting of Rudolph in front of a fireplace. See the finished, colored and animated card here: marsdenillustration.com/happy-holidays-meilleurs-voeux-frohe-festtage/
Very cool to see your whole process. Would have really loved to see the illustrator coloring process as well. Could you do another video on this subject at some point? You have incredible talent and I'm always inspired watching you work. Thanks for your videos!
+Rick Christy thank you very much. I will be uploading new videos soon. I appreciate your comment.
This umbrella IS rather beastly. :) #cartoon #illustration #lord #umbrella
I loved santa´s face! i really do, it has a nice detail and its very well craft, love all the illustration :D
Thank you very much. Delighhted that you like it.
Cool it's jahova
My name is Ian to.
i love this, very inspiring!
Thank you very much.
I like the way your painting colors in with the pen tool and pencil. Im having a problem simulating you. My fill is colored and my stroke is transparent but when I begin coloring adobe switches it and applies color to my stroke and makes my fill transparent.
+808BURN3RS sorry about the delayed reply. I only just saw this message. I'm not sure I understand. Can you explain the problem in more detail please? Are you applying the color on a new layer? Is the layer below the line art?
Can you tell me please what´s the advantages of doing a drawing in Illustrator besides not loosing quality when you stretch. Are there any other advantages? Thanks. . (By the way, it´s not possible to rotate with Illustrator CS6 but with Photoshop CS6 you can do it.)
+cristaon sorry about the delayed reply - I only just saw all of these comments. The main advantage is the clean line, for sure. Also the lines and brushstrokes can be modified and corrected individually with the bezier handles if required. It is true that it is impossible to rotate the canvas in illustrator. One hopes with each update that this feature might be available but if you consider all the geometry and math that goes into vector artwork, it would be very hard to compute the rotation of a complex illustration. (Each point would have to be rotated simultaneously). You can of course rotate elements and objects in Illustrator individually no problem.
So I see you also use Mangastudio..., I only know Photohop. here it looks like the pen is more sensitive by the lines. I have a intuos, don´t you recommend Photohop for this kind of drawings? Thanks.
I don't like doing my line drawings in photoshop. I prefer drawing my lines as vector art either in Manga Studio or Illustrator. However I like to color my artwork in photoshop. Of course everybody has their own preferences and I believe if you spend some time tweaking your brushes and saving your libraries and also downloading some of the excellent brushes you can find on deviant art and other websites by other amazing artists you can certainly create wonderful line art directly in Photoshop as well.
Ian David Marsden thank you for answering, I didn´t know Manga Studio was vector lines, I´d like very much to try it (or even Sketchbook). Is it possible to get it from the internet? And I didn´t notice it was possible to download brushers from deviantart, that´s really great, I will sure do it !!.
Hi, I also like to draw the same kind of drawing you do . I bought last year a wacom (it´s a Intuos Pen&touch) first I tried the medium at home for a week but than I realized that the small was enough for me because I didn´t use the all table, so there was no point spending more money. At first it was very dificult because of the coordination as you said. I´m still training but I´m improving. I din´t have a clue (unfortunally nobody knows nothing at the shops) that with Cintiq that problem disapears. Thanks for teeling us that. I hope some day I have the money to buy a Cintiq so I don´t have to do the sketches on the paper first like you also use to do . I use it with Photoshop. Do you think Autodesk sketchbook is better? I never tried that one.... Thank you.
+cristaon Hi there - sorry about the delayed reply - I only just saw this message. I like to work in Photoshop also but I find that SketchBook Pro has better drawing tools and a more realistic pencil feel. I also like the perspective tools and other features. Even the marker coloring effects remind me of the good old days.
